Denzel Washington Tells Why He Doesn't View Himself As A Sex Symbol In April EBONY

Jet, March 20, 2000

Many will not argue that actor Denzel Washington is a gifted performer. But, in the April EBONY, the Oscar winner explains why he often begs to differ when people utter the title sex symbol when mentioning his name.

"I don't see it," he tells EBONY. "I don't even know where it's coming from. It's not like I'm walking down the street and women are passing out all over the place. Nobody in my house buys into it."

Recently nominated for another Oscar for his riveting depiction of wrongly convicted middleweight boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter in the acclaimed drama The Hurricane, Washington unashamedly reveals that he's hoping to walk away with another coveted trophy.

He won his first Academy Award in 1990 for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a rebellious former slave in the Civil War drama Glory.

Washington also sets the record straight on the rumors about his reportedly limiting himself when it comes to love scenes.

"A good love story is one of the things I'm looking to do down the road. I just haven't found the right script," he says.

The April issue also features the articles "Why The Census Is Important To You," "Why Some Good Girls Prefer Bad Guys," "Why AIDS Is A Growing Threat To Black Women" and "Is Skin Color Still An Issue In Black America?"

You'll also get up close and personal with music heartthrob D'Angelo in "Why Sisters Are Excited About D'Angelo," and meet the NBA's fastest-rising star, Toronto Raptors phenomenal forward Vince Carter, in "Is Vince Carter The Next Michael Jordan?"
