Tiger Woods Named PGA Player Of The Year

Jet, Sept 18, 2000

The golf season is still in full swing, yet Tiger Woods already has won this year's PGA Player of the Year award--the third time in four years he has claimed the prestigious honor--the PGA of America recently announced.

Although the award recipient traditionally is named at the end of the season, which this year is Nov. 6-12 at the American Express Championship at Valderrama Golf Club in Spain, Woods has been so dominant, winning three majors and eight PGA Tour events, that no one has a mathematical chance of catching him.

Woods already has a record season point total of 255 after his recent victory in the NEC Invitational in Akron, OH--his eighth title of the year. Phil Mickelson is currently the runner-up with 64 points, followed by Hal Sutton and Ernie Els with 44 each.

The PGA Player of the Year Award, originated by the PGA of America in 1948, is based on tournament victories, official money standing and scoring average. The top 10 finishers on the PGA Tour's money and scoring average lists are eligible to win the award.
