More than 800 guests attended the annual Global Leadership Award dinner, hosted by the United Nations Association of the USA and the Business Council for the United Nations (UNA-USA/BCUN). Winfrey was lauded for her commitment to empowering individuals and communities through education through her Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the forthcoming Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls South Africa. Other honorees were Joan Ganz Cooney, co-founder of Sesame Workshop and originator of the preschool educational series "Sesame Street," and Peter G. Peterson, chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Institute for International Economics. Cooney and Peterson both received the 2004 Global Leadership Award. The UNA-USA/BCU-N awards recognize outstanding leadership in furthering the purposes of the United Nations.
