Caption: CONTROVERSIAL GEORGIA HISTORY BOOK: Michele Mitchell of Fayetteville, GA, holds a copy of The Story of Our Georgia Community, a third-grade history book being used in Atlanta. Mitchell, the mother of an elementary school student, wants Georgia's Board of Education to ban the book because it says, "Black people from Africa and the West Indies were brought to America to help do work on large farms." At JET press time the local Board of Education denied Mitchell's request to stop using the book. As an alternative the Board directed teachers to find other resources on slavery and civil rights to fill in the gaps. Mitchell, an employee at Atlanta's African-American history museum, the APEX Museum, has been asked to help find suitable reading materials.
