Caption: PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION: Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade acknowledges the crowd of 60,000 attendees at his inauguration, which included more than 20 African heads of state. In attendance were Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, who recently celebrated 30 years of rule, as well as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The 80-year-old Wade, who was elected in February, was sworn into office this month for a second term of five years at Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium in Dakar. "We have shown the world that in Africa, as in all the world's major democracies, we can wake up on the morning following an election and count votes, instead of counting bodies," he said. Gadhafi and Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure and first lady Toure Lobbo Tratore (l-r) also were present at a ceremony that marked Senegal's Independence Day. The West African country won its independence from France 47 years ago.
