Arlene Ackerman, the Christian A. Johnson Professor of Outstanding Educational Practice at the Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City and a former superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District, has been appointed chief executive officer of the School District of Philadelphia effective June 1.
