Honoring James Farmer

During a recent ceremony at Massaponax High School in Spotsylvania, VA, the state of Virginia dedicated a historical marker honoring the late civil rights leader and educator James Farmer, a founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Unveiling the marker are Farmer's granddaughter, Abigale Gonzalez, daughter, Tami Farmer Gonzalez, and Joseph L.

Bumbrey, president of the Omicron Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, which sponsored the marker. CORE, under Farmer's leadership as national director, used nonviolent direct action to promote racial equality. It organized the first Freedom Ride aimed at integrating interstate travel facilities in the South. The marker will be placed near Farmer's home in Spotsylvania.
