Ray Charles Donates Another $1 Million To Morehouse College
Jet, Oct 8, 2001
Legendary singer Ray Charles recently donated $1 million to Morehouse College in Atlanta, during a ceremony in which he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
Charles has now donated a total of $2 million to the all-male school.
Earlier this year, Charles surprised the college with a check for $1 million during the school's annual "A Candle in the Dark" gala (JET, March 19). During that ceremony, Charles was awarded the prestigious Candle Award for Lifetime Achievement in Arts and Entertainment.
Charles' generous donation will be used to build a performing arts center.
Morehouse is the nation's only historically Black, private liberal arts college for men and is ranked by Black Enterprise magazine as the No. 1 college in the nation for educating Black students. Founded in 1867, Morehouse enrolls approximately 3,000 students and confers bachelor's degrees on more Black men than any other institution in the nation.
Prominent alumni include civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher, filmmaker Spike Lee, actor Samuel L. Jackson and Maynard Jackson, the first Black mayor of Atlanta.
