Jet, April 15, 2002
Mayor Sharpe James (r), joined by New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey, kicks off his campaign for an unprecedented fifth term as leader of the state's largest city to cheers from nearly 350 supporters at a rally in Newark. During his speech James listed jobs, businesses and development that have come to Newark during his 16-year tenure.
The 66-year-old incumbent noted that the last public housing high-rise complex remaining in the city will be demolished in May to pave the way for a $200 million development that includes new housing, a high school and shopping mall. James will face Newark Councilman Cory Booker, 32, in the May 14 nonpartisan election.
