Jet, April 22, 2002
For accomplishing 68 years of "holy matrimony," during a hectic career of "saving souls," Pastor William C. Scales and his wife, Myra, were honored on Capitol Hill by Rep. Donald M. Payne (D-NJ).
The pair were feted at lunch in the House members' private dining room where they listened to praise from numerous VIPs and later were presented a plaque containing Payne's remarks about them on the House floor.
The chronicle of their marriage and dedicated service had been put into the Congressional Record.
Among the lunch dignitaries was Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones from Cleveland, OH, where the Scales had lived for 25 years. The congresswoman promised to send a proclamation to their family reunion and also attend, if her schedule permitted.
"We were blessed and we will always remember this day," said Mrs. Scales.
Married in Charleston, W. VA. Pastor Scales, of the Seventh Day Adventist faith, had churches in Baltimore, MD., Asbury Park, NJ, and Portsmouth, VA.
