New Consul General of Sweden

Caption: NEW CONSUL GENERAL OF SWEDEN: Swedish Ambassador to the U.S. Jan Eliasson presents Dr. S. Allen Counter, director, Harvard Foundation at Harvard University, with a decree from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden that appoints Counter Consul General of Sweden in Boston and New England, during a ceremony at Harvard in Cambridge, MA. Counter will represent Sweden in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont. "Sweden is a great nation with a respected tradition of peace, objectivity and humanitarianism," said Counter. "I am pleased to represent the people of Sweden in my native land." Counter received his doctor of medical science degree from Sweden's prestigious Karolinska Nobel Institute where he is an appointed visiting professor. Counter also serves as professor in neurology at Harvard Medical School. He is the first Black to be appointed Consul General of Sweden in an American city.
