Supporting University Of Michigan Admissions

Jet, April 16, 2001

SUPPORTING UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ADMISSIONS: Erika Dowdell, a junior history major who testified for the defense in lawsuits against the University of Michigan's admissions policies, addresses the media on campus in Ann Arbor, MI, following U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman's recent ruling that the law school's admissions standards are unconstitutional because they use race as a factor in judging applicants.

Dowdell said she was "outraged" by the decision. The ruling comes as a result of two 1997 lawsuits claiming the university's admissions policies unconstitutionally discriminated against Whites in favor of less-qualified minorities (JET, Nov. 6, 2000). The university said it will appeal Friedman's ruling immediately.
