Confidential: Credited with bringing in more than a million dollars to the Democratic election forces was Harlem Rep. Charles Rangel. The New Yorker not only canvassed corporate areas, but he increased the tempo of the Black middle-class givers, squelching rumors that minorities give little to support political causes. Had the Democrats gained control of the House, Rep. Rangel would have become the first Black chair of the Ways and Means Committee. Other key campaigners--California Rep. Maxine Waters, Black Caucus chair, and Detroit Rep. John Conyers, ranking Democrat on the Judiciary committee. Angle: This was the first time that the Black Caucus was given a national role outside of the inner cities ... One achievement Illinois Senator Carol Moseley-Braun was never praised for was her work with the Senate Banking Committee. She opened doors for many minority business people and became a cog in a valuable endeavor ... Beware of travel to Liberia! The State Department is readying a travel advisory warning of the danger of violence in many sections of the country from roving gangs in Monrovia and a section near the border to Sierra Leone ... Mayor-elect of the nation's capital, finance specialist Anthony Williams, campaigned in the closing days wearing a baseball cap, a far cry from the days when the city was the country's political fashion setter ... New holiday album of singer Etta James--Songs of Christmas ... Celebrating the 160th anniversary of his church, Washington's Metropolitan AME Church pastor Rev. Dr. Louis-Charles Harvey made sure that among the services listed in the program were a food bank and an AIDS education project ... Suffering from a bleeding ulcer at Holy Cross Hospital in Pompano Beach, FL, GOPer Dr. Maurice Dawkins, never-the-less, advised his wife, Dr. Joan S. Wallace, on conducting "Operation Retaliation." Black Democrats were urged to support GOP governor-candidate Jeb Bush after Willie Logan, a Black official, was (lumped by their party. The boycott worked.
