MAKING A DIFFERENCE: U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) meets with famed singers (l-r) Tyrese and Jaheim and her grandson, Morehouse University student poet Mikael Moore, during the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's recent 31st annual conference in Washington, D.C. Waters brought members of Congress, hip-hop artists and Black youth together from around the country for an issue-oriented forum titled, "Young, Gifted & Black: We Care Too." The forum gave young people an opportunity to speak with their political leaders and hip-hop icons about the many questions and emotions created by the Sept.
11 terrorist attacks (JET, Oct. 1). Also during the conference (below), Waters hosted an economic stimulus brain trust, which included NBA legend-turned businessman, Earvin "Magic" Johnson, concerning growing anxiety over job layoffs, depreciating stock value and decline in consumer demand in the wake of the attacks.
