Feel'n good in South Carolina
Jet, April 29, 2002
As part of the second annual Beach Music Day celebration, Grammy Award-winner James Brown (r) addresses an audience on the steps of the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia, SC, after Gov. Jim Hodges (1) issued a proclamation that declared the 68-year-old singer South Carolina's "Godfather of Soul" and recognized him for his commitment to music.
Brown, who lives in Beech Island near the Georgia border, sang his hit I Got You (I Feel Good) and thanked Hodges for the recognition. "I don't talk that good, I don't sing that good. But I can say, `I feel good!'" Brown exclaimed. Beach music played during the 1950s and `60s along the coast is the official popular music of the state. The legendary performer has won Grammys for hit songs Papa's Got A Brand New Bag and Living in America.
