Refurbishing Historic New York Theater

Jet, April 12, 1999

NBA legend Magic Johnson pauses as he conducts a news conference while New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani looks on at New York's City Hall. Johnson and Giuliani announced that Magic Johnson Theaters and Plaza Construction Corporation have been designated to revitalize and operate the historic Loews King Theater on Flatbush Avenue in the Brooklyn borough of New York.

The $30 million project will transform the movie house, which closed in 1977, to a state-of-the-art, 12-screen multiplex. "We feel that we are going to have a great success here in Brooklyn, a theater that everybody will be proud of and everybody will come and support," Johnson said in the New York Times. "We will continue to be a community-based theater; that's what we do different than any other theater chain."
