Portland's Shawn Kemp Enters Drug Rehab For Cocaine Abuse
Jet, April 23, 2001
Six-time NBA All-Star Shawn Kemp of the Portland Trail Blazers ended his first season with the team early to check himself into a drug rehabilitation program. He will be treated for cocaine abuse and will not return for the remainder of the season.
Because the 31-year-old forward volunteered for the program, he will continue on full salary said Blazers' general manager Bob Whitsitt.
"The entire Blazer organization supports Shawn during this difficult time," Whitsitt said. "He's taking steps to put his personal life in order so that he can return to his professional career and Shawn should be commended for his actions."
Coach Mike Dunleavy said, "We wish Shawn the best and the fullest recovery. We'll be waiting with open arms when he recovers."
The former All-Star was traded to Portland in August after spending three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kemp averaged 6.5 points and 3.8 rebounds, his worst numbers since his rookie season in 1989-90.
