Tiger Woods named Player of the Year after leading tour with five victories

Jet, Jan 5, 2004

Golf superstar Tiger Woods was recently voted PGA Tour Player of the Year for the fifth-straight time. Despite the facts that he missed the first five weeks of the year when he had knee surgery and he has not won a major championship since 1998, Woods' peers decided this season was his best on the tour.

Woods, the No. 1ranked golf player, led the tour with five victories, including two World Golf Championships, had the second-lowest scoring average ever (68.41) and was second on the money list, even though he played only 18 events.

"There's a tremendous amount of satisfaction because it just shows that guys on the tour respect that I was consistent, that I've won numerous times," said Woods, who recently became engaged to his girlfriend Elin Nordegren. "I think that's what the award reflects."

This is Woods' sixth Player of the Year award in seven years; no one else has won it more than twice since it was created in 1990. Also, he became the first player to win the award since 1995 despite his not winning a major title.
