Singer Dionne Warwick is presented the first World Women's Award for Lifetime Achievement by former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev as her fellow recipient and cousin Whitney Houston looks on during the first-ever World Women's Award ceremony at Hamburg's Congress Center, in northern Germany.
Organizers said the prize was designed "for women whose unique achievements have contributed to a better, more peaceful and humane society." A 300-member jury chose winners in 12 categories. Below, Houston and Gorbachev pose with her award. The 40-year-old singer said: "My message for women is to love and respect themselves, for if they love themselves, then they can love others as well. I have learned to do this. Through love for myself and praying to our Lord, I have been able to overcome my personal problem." Other award recipients included model Naomi Campbell, figure skater Katarina Witt, human rights activist Bianca Jagger and fashion signer Vivienne Westwood.
