The hard work that actors Jamie Foxx, Don Cheadle, Mos Def and Morgan Freeman put in didn't go unnoticed in 2004, at least not by the 62nd Annual Golden Globes nomination committee. All the men received nods for their movie roles with Foxx earning a record three nominations.

Foxx, who showed the world the range of his acting abilities, received a nomination for best musical or comedy actor for his uncanny portrayal of the late legendary singer Ray Charles in Ray. He also earned a nod for supporting film actor as a cabbie taken hostage by a hit man in Collateral.

Foxx's portrayal of Stan "Tookie" Williams, the former South Los Angeles street gangster, death row inmate and author of anti-gang books for children, was well-received by committee judges, earning him yet another nomination, this time for best TV movie or miniseries actor for the FX docudrama Redemption: The Stan "Tookie" Williams Story.

The Golden Globe nominations came on Foxx's 37th birthday.

"What a great way to start the day with three birthday gifts," Foxx said. "I am honored to be mentioned in the same categories with such tremendously talented actors."

Don Cheadle is a contender in the category of best actor in a drama for his role in Hotel Rwanda, which is also nominated for best drama. In the film Cheadle stars as real-life hero Paul Rusesabagina, an innkeeper who shelters over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda.

Also up for best actor in a TV movie or miniseries is Mos Def for his part as Vivien Thomas in HBO's medical drama Something the Lord Made.

Going head to head against Foxx in the best supporting actor category is veteran actor Morgan Freeman, who plays Eddie "Scrap-Iron" Dupris in the boxing drama Million Dollar Baby.

The Golden Globe nominees are chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's (HFPA) small group of approximately 90 reporters who cover overseas news outlets. The awards are given in 13 movie and 11 television categories.

The ceremony will be televised live on the NBC network on Jan. 16.
