Caption: NEW SIGMA GAMMA RHO MEMBER: Rapper-actress MC Lyre recently became a mereber of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. during a special induction ceremony in California, Lyre, whose real name is Lana Moorer, currently has a recurring role on the UPN sitcom "Half & Half," The hip-hop pioneer made music history in 1990 as the first rap artist to ever perform at New York's landmark Carnegie Hall. She was also the first female rapper to ever receive a gold single. Her hits include / Cram To Understand U, Paper Thin, Kickin' 4 Brooklyn, Cha Cha Cha, Cappucino, I Am The Lyte, Poor Georgie, Ruffneck, Keep On Keepin' On and Cold Rock A Party. Active in numerous social projects/organizations, Lyrke's work includes involvement in anti-violence campaigns, Rock the Vote and AIDS benefits. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, founded by seven educators, was organized on November 12, 1922. It was the first Black organization on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis.
