Alonzo Mourning Is Top NBA Defensive Player

Jet, June 7, 1999

Miami Heat center Alonzo Mourning, one of the league's dominant defenders, was easily named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Mourning, 29, received 89 of a possible 118 votes for a record 75.4 percent of the vote from a panel of writers and broadcasters.

"That's great," Mourning said about the award. "Can I trade it in to be playing in Atlanta?"

Despite a stellar season, Mourning's team was surprisingly knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by the New York Knicks.

Mourning led the NBA with 180 blocked shots for an average of 3.9 per game. Finishing second in the voting was Atlanta Hawks center Dikembe Mutombo.
