DETROIT TEACHER RECEIVES NATIONAL EDUCATOR AWARD: Stacie Smith (c), a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher at Davison Elementary School in Detroit, gets the surprise of her career-and hugs from students Tenika Jackson (1) and Charles Maddox-during a recent school assembly where Smith, 31, learned she is a recipient of the annual Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.

"I honestly have no idea what to say," she told cheering students and colleagues, the Detroit Free Press reported. "I am deeply humbled and appreciative." As one of 100 educators honored for their commitment and work, Smith receives a $25,000 prize and trip to Los Angeles, where awardees will discuss teacher recruitment and retention. Philanthropist Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken foundation, created the Educator awards in 1985 to celebrate the nation's most outstanding teachers, principals and specialists in elementary education.
