Movie 'Ray' hauls in $20.1 million over premiere weekend

Jet, Nov 15, 2004

Fans showed their love of Ray Charles by heading to theaters in huge numbers. The movie Ray, which features Jamie Foxx, pulled in $20.1 million over the weekend.

The box-office numbers for Ray, a hit with the movie critics, have been closely watched because of its Academy Award potential. Industry observers note that a critically acclaimed film that doesn't connect with moviegoers may have a lesser chance of getting Oscar consideration in the big categories.

In a weekend dominated by scary, Halloween-related movies, Ray averaged $10,020 per theater. That is considerably higher than The Grudge, the movie that won the box-office battle with $22.4 million. It only averaged $6,600 per screen. USA Today pointed out that 40 percent of the audience for Ray was non Black which demonstrates broad appeal.

Jamie Foxx has been heralded as one of the front-runners for Oscar consideration for his performance as Ray Charles (JET, Nov. 1).
