LAWSUIT FILED: Attorney Mark Ravis (c) and members of the nonprofit group Friends of Martin Luther King Jr.,/Drew Medical Center Inc. discuss a lawsuit against Los Angeles County for discrimination during a press conference outside the Los Angeles Federal Court. The nonprofit group, who includes patients, doctors and community members, accused Los Angeles County and its health department of violating the equal protection clause of the U.S.
Constitution and the 1964 Civil Rights Act as well as federal Medicare and Medicaid regulations and various state laws. The group is trying to prevent closure of the trauma center, alleging the Los Angeles County officials have intentionally tried to dismantle the inner-city hospital.
