Energy-Efficient Driving: Aggressive driving wastes gas. Speeding, rapid acceleration and hard braking Ican shrink highway gas mileage 33 percent and city mileage 5 percent. Extra weight and drag also decreases gas mileage. Clearing out your car of non-essential items and placing items inside the car or trunk rather than on roof racks will save gas. A loaded roof rack can decrease your fuel economy by 5 percent.
