PIONEER AWARD HONOREES: Rock n' roll great Chubby Checker (2nd, l) congratulates Kool and the Gang members, (l-r) Robert "Kool" Bell, Ronald Khalis Bayyan and Dennis "DT" Thomas, who are among this year's Pioneer Award recipients, at a news conference announcing the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's 20th anniversary of its Pioneer Awards at the Loews Hotel in Philadelphia. Other honorees include Chaka Khan (Lifetime Achievement Award); Teena Marie, Bill Withers and Sugar Pie DeSanto (Individual Artists Awards); The Whispers (Group Award); The Funk Brothers (Sidemen Award); Donny Hathaway (Legacy Award) and AI Bell of Stax Records (Leadership Award). The Pioneer Awards will be presented Sept. 9 in Philadelphia.
