American Basketball Assn. To Return In December
Jet, Oct 23, 2000
The ABA--American Basketball Association--is back.
The ABA, which existed from 1967 to 1976, recently announced it will begin play December 26.
With former NBA players like George Gervin to serve as coaches, the ABA plans to lure players unable to make NBA rosters, European players, and Americans who play overseas.
The men's professional basketball league has committed franchises in Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, Memphis, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville and Hampton Roads. It will have a $900,000 salary cap for its 10-player rosters. The league will play a 60-game season and will have an average ticket price of $20.
During the time of the ABA's existing nine seasons, it battled the already established NBA for players, fans and media attention. In June of 1976, the rivals came to an agreement and the four strongest ABA teams joined the NBA.
