NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLORED WOMEN'S CLUBS HONOREE: Atty. Frankie Muse Freeman (2nd, r) is congratulated by (l-r) National Association of Colored Women s Clubs (NACWC) National President Margaret J. Cooper, fellow St. Louis attorney and NACWC board member Wayman Smith and Howard University President Dr. H. Patrick Swygert during an NACWC luncheon in Washington, D.C., where she was presented the organization's Mary Church Terrell Legacy Award and saluted by dignitaries from education, politics and law. Still practicing law in St. Louis, the Howard alum was recognized for her outstanding career in civil rights, education and community service. Her work brought down segregation in St. Louis public housing, and in 1964, she became the first woman appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. NACWC, founded in 1896, is the nation's oldest Black women's organization.
