L. Douglas Wilder
Jet, Nov 22, 2004 by Simeon Booker
Virginia's first Black governor, L. Douglas Wilder, earned the plaudits of his southern hometown. A front-page headline of the Richmond, Virginia Times Dispatch Newspaper read, "Wilder Cruises to Victory" in announcing his election as the city's first elected mayor. Not only had Wilder supported the idea of an elected mayor against the wishes of some leading Black politicos, but he had become one of the candidates for the job.
It was one of the biggest wins for a U.S. Black on Election Day and returned Wilder again to the political frontlines.
