The National Association for Equal Opportunity In Higher Education (NAFEO) recently held its 27th annual national conference in Washington, D.C., to seek dialogue with Congressional leaders about issues impacting Black colleges and universities.

The education leaders met with Capitol Hill lawmakers to influence policy, address issues of federal financial support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and to get clarity on President Bush's policies toward HBCUs.

Dr. Frederick S. Humphries, president and CEO of NAFEO, said, "This is the largest and most substantive conference that NAFEO has had in 10 years. We discussed a number of issues, including supporting President Bush's goal of leaving no child behind."

During the conference, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher outlined what Black people must do to improve health care. Dr. Wilbert Bryant, deputy assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Education's Office Postsecondary Education, delivered the plenary keynote address while David Turner, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Gateway, was the keynote speaker at the NAFEO technology luncheon. Present and past Black college presidents received awards for exemplary service to HBCUs.

Ted Waite, chairman and CEO of Gateway, received the Corporate Award for his contribution in narrowing the digital divide. Eric Conn, vice president of Honda, received the Corporate Leadership Award for continuing support for the Honda Campus All Star challenge.

NAFEO is an association of 118 Black colleges and universities.
