Doing household chores can help you get in shape for summer

Jet, May 26, 2003

So, you want to shed some extra pounds with summer right around the corner? You say you're too busy to drive to the gym or take those fitness classes? Well, good news--you're burning calories and possibly getting a cardiovascular workout when you do simple chores at home.

Household cleaning and yard work fit into the federal government's guidelines as moderate exercise. The following daily activities, performed at a moderate intensity, can be done in short spurts--10 minutes here, 10 minutes there. Alone, each activity does not have a great effect on your health, but an accumulation of 30 minutes of activity over the course of the day can result in substantial health benefits.

* Vacuuming

When you vacuum, do it at a consistent pace and increase your range of motion to get the most out of this work out. You can burn up to 90 calories per 30 minutes. Extra bonus: When you vacuum the stairs, the lifting will help tone your arms.

* Window Washing

When washing windows, you're working your shoulders, triceps, biceps and the muscles in your back. Depending on how many windows you clean and the amount of mirrors in your home, you can burn over 390 calories an hour.

* Cleaning Out The Garage

Remember when cleaning out the garage or attic, you may have to lift heavy items, so make sure the weight does not exceed your capability. Always try to keep your back straight and remember to lift with your legs. This particular activity works your upper and lower body, and you can burn about 320 calories an hour in the process. In addition there's the satisfaction that comes from tidying up your home.

* Lawn Mowing

Use a push mower instead of a rider to maximize the benefits of this activity. Lawn mowing is a great way to exercise once or twice a week, because you can burn over 400 calories an hour and strengthen your hamstring and quadricep muscles for stronger and shapelier legs.

* Gardening: Digging And Planting

Working in your yard and gardening is very therapeutic, so be careful not to get carried away. Listen to your muscles and be aware if you are overexerting yourself. When digging you are using your lower back, leg and abdominal muscles. Digging for an hour can net you a 500-calorie burn. And when you plant those beautiful spring flowers, you can burn over 160 calories in 30 minutes.
