Iman Says She Used Old African Custom To Get Pregnant

Jet, May 8, 2000

Supermodel Iman recently revealed that she had to invoke an old African custom to get pregnant after she and her famed husband, musician David Bowie, had tried to conceive for more than a year without Success.

"In Africa there's a tradition that when a woman wants to conceive and is having a hard time, she should hold another woman's baby," Iman said during a television interview, according to Newsday.

The Somalian-born beauty says she borrowed fellow model Christie Brinkley's child.

"Christie and I were on a set shooting Vogue last year around September, and she let me hold her baby all day long. And boom. I got pregnant a few days later," said Iman.

This will be Iman and Bowie's first child together. The two, who wed in 1992, both have children in their 20s from previous marriages.
