Jet, May 14, 2001
San Diego Padres' Rickey Henderson showed he could walk the walk when he broke Babe Ruth's major league, all-time walks record and set his own at 2,063.
During a recent game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, Henderson walked on a 3-1 pitch leading off the ninth inning. He tossed his bat aside, jogged to first base and acknowledged the standing ovation from the crowd by blowing kisses.
"The record is outstanding," Henderson said after the 5-3 loss to the Phi]lies. "It's great to be in a class with Babe Ruth, but I'm the type of person who wants to win."
Henderson said he'll keep the historic first base and send the ball to the Hall of Fame.
Henderson, 42, who is in his 237d season, is Major League Baseball's career stolen bases leader.
