Leader of a holy dance

Jet, May 27, 2002

South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu leads a dance processional down the middle aisle of St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral toward the end of the service where he gave a sermon at the outset of his four-day visit in Seattle. More than 1,000 people of all ages and ethnicities crammed into the church to hear the 71-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner speak during a service that lasted nearly two hours.

While giving a 20-minute sermon Tutu said, "What a glorious occasion this is. What beautiful people I see. For people who have never been unfree of the shackles of oppression ... I have to use my special magic wand to turn you into South Africans, so you can celebrate honor, peace and freedom." Tutu made the visit primarily for the launch of the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation USA, which is designed to work with universities nationwide to create leadership academics emphasizing peace, social justice and reconciliation.
