Caption: A $1 MILLION DONATION: James H. Ammons (c), chancellor of North Central University (NCCU), is presented a check for $1 million by Tricia Townes (r) and Helen McLean (2nd, r), family members of the late Dr. Mary M. Townes (inset), during NCCU's homecoming game in Durham, as Susan Hester, interim vice chancellor for Institutional Advancement, looks on. Dr. Townes, who served NCCU for nearly 44 years, bequeathed the money to the university to establish the Mary E. Townes Continuing Education Scholarship Fund. Prior to her retirement in 1994 she served as chair of the Department of Biology, dean of graduate students and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Townes died in 2003. During homecoming weekend NCCU honored the late educator with the Dr. James E. Shepard Legacy Award at the Legacy Gala.
