ACLU Tells What You Should Do If Stopped By Police

Jet, May 10, 1999

In response to the rising incidents of police officers who stop Black motorists simply because they are Black, the American Civil Liberties Union is issuing tips to drivers on what to do if they are stopped by police.

"Police abuse is a serious national problem--and one that especially affects young people and people of color," Ira Glasser, executive director of the ACLU, said in a press statement.

"Each of us has the right to be treated with respect--and without abuse--by the police," he said.

He added, "To fight police abuse effectively, you need to know your rights. There are some things you should do, some things you must do and some things you cannot do." Listed below are a few of the ACLU's tips to remember when stopped by police:

* Be polite and respectful. Never bad-mouth a police officer.

* Upon request, show them your driver's license, registration and proof of insurance.

* Stay calm and in control of your words, body language and emotions.

* Don't get into an argument with the police. Remember, anything you say or do can be used against you.

* Keep your hands where the police can see them.

* Don't run. Don't touch the police officer.

* Don't complain on the scene or tell the police they're wrong or that you are going to file a complaint.

* Remember officers' badge and patrol card numbers.

* If you feel your rights have been violated, file a written complaint with the police department's internal affairs division or civilian complaint board.

The ACLU, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is issuing pocket-sized cards that people can carry with them which contain these tips.

The ACLU is a national organization that defends individuals' rights which are guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
