This year's World Series was a rare one. New York couldn't lose!

The New York Yankees three-peated as World Series champions when they stopped the New York Mets in Game 5 of the first Subway Series in 44 years.

The Yankees have become the most storied franchise with 26 championships, and this victory sets the stage for more fame this century.

The Bronx Bombers and their fans celebrated with a parade down Broadway's Canyon of Champions in downtown Manhattan.

Some New York-based companies gave their employees the day off declaring a "Yankee Day" because the parade has become a de facto annual tradition.

Sports icon Derek Jeter radiated his power and leadership skills throughout the post-season. The Yankees superstar shortstop became the first player to earn World Series and All-Star MVP accolades in the same season.

"Every year is a different story," said Jeter, who has headed this Yankees dynasty since 1996. "I'd be lying if I said this one wasn't more gratifying."

The first two games of the series felt familiar for the Yankees when they came out victors, but the Mets didn't go down without a fight. The Mets won Game 3 at home to get back in the series 2-1. This triumph for the Mets in Shea Stadium terminated the Yankees 14-game World Series winning streak.

However, the Yankees ignited a win in Game 4, when Jeter homered the first pitch of the game, his first home run in the series.

Game 5 was a nail-biter through the ninth inning. Bernie Williams hit a home run in the second inning and put the Yanks up 1-0. The Mets answered, scoring two runs in the same inning. Jeter proved why he's most valuable when he tied the game at 2-2 with a sixth-inning solo home run.

In the ninth inning Luis Sojo hit a two-out, tie-breaking single that scored two runs, which enabled the Yankees to leave as champagne-soaked champions.
