* FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT OF UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI: Newly hired University of Missouri System President Elson Floyd (l) meets Gov. Bob Holden at the Governor's Mansion in Jefferson City, MO. Floyd, currently the president of Western Michigan University, begins his new job on Jan. 6, 2003. In taking the position, Floyd became the university's first Black president, replacing Manuel Pacheco, who is retiring at the end of the year. Floyd, 46, is a native of Henderson, NC, Who earned his undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The University of Missouri System has more than 60,000 students and an annual budget of $1.8 billion.
