Divas sing down the house at the sixth annual 'VH1 Divas Duets' benefit
Jet, June 9, 2003
Divas of the music world sashayed, strutted and sang down the house--all for a good cause--at the recent "VH1 Divas Duets" benefit concert, which aired live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Veteran divas Chaka Khan, Whitney Houston and Mary J. Blige shared the spotlight with divas-in-training Beyonce and Ashanti in an evening filled with soulful solos and dynamic duets. The fellas also held it down that night as Stevie Wonder, Bobby Brown and the Isley Brothers laid down smooth grooves with the ladies.
Celine Dion, Lisa Marie Presley, Jewel, Sharon Osbourne, Shania Twain, Aisha Tyler and Pat Benatar rounded out the star-studded ensemble.
And what diva gathering would be complete without a drama queen? Oscar-winning actress, singer and rapper Queen Latifah hosted the sixth annual VH1 Divas" extravaganza, which raised funds for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps to restore music programs in America's public schools and raise awareness of the impact of these programs on students.
More than $25 million worth of musical instruments has been donated to 1,000 public schools in 75 cities since the founding of Save The Music in 1997.
