LEGENDS OF BASEBALL STAMPS: Unveiling the U.S. Postal Service's new Legends of Baseball stamp series during a recent pre-game ceremony at Busch Stadium in St. Louis are former St. Louis Cardinals superstars Lou Brock and Ozzie Smith and sports broadcaster Digger Phelps, a member of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, and U.S.

Postal Service CEO Clarence Lewis. The new commemorative series honors 20 legends of Major League Baseball, who were honored last season as part of Major League Baseball's All-Century Team" program. "The Legends of Baseball stamps celebrate America's favorite pastime by saluting many of the colorful individuals who make the game what it is today," said Postal Service CEO Lewis. The three Black baseball greats among the 20 legends cited are Negro Leaguer Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, who pitched in the Negro Leagues and later signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1948, and Jackie Robinson, who broke the Major League Baseball color barrier when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. The stamps were illustrated by Joe Saffold of Savannah, GA. Phil Jordan of Falls Church, VA was the art director.
