HONORING MANDELA: Former South African President Nelson Mandela display the certificate that proclaims him an honorary citizen of the state of Maryland presented to him by Gov. Parris N. Glendening (1) as University of Maryland President C.D. Mote Jr. applauds during a recent ceremony at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House in College Park.
Mandela delivered the university's annual Anwar Sadat Lecture for Peace, named in honor of the slain Egyptian president. Below, Mandela meets with Sadat's widow, Dr. Jehan Sadat, senior fellow at the University of Maryland's Center for International Development and Conflict Management. During his lecture before an audience of 10,000, Mandela reiterated his support for the war against terrorism in Afghanistan, but also urged that the United States end the war soon.
