Gloria Bromell-Tinubu, Ph.D., an economics professor at Spelman College in Atlanta, was named president of Bethune-Cookman College (B-CC) in Daytona Beach, FL, B-CC Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. J. Stanley Marshall recently announced.
She is expected to begin her term as the fifth president of the nearly 100-year-old coed liberal arts college in July 2004. She will succeed Dr. Oswald P. Bronson Sr., president since 1975, who'll retire next year.
"She brings an outstanding combination of experience and vision that will build on the legacy of the Bronson presidency and move the college forward," said Marshall.
Bromell-Tinubu graduated from Howard University with a bachelor's in theater in 1974. She earned a master's in agricultural economics from Clemson University in 1977 and a Ph.D. in applied economics from Clemson in 1986.
In addition to teaching at Spelman, Bromell-Tinubu served on the Atlanta City Council and the Georgia Board of Education.
Established in 1904 by Mary McLeod Bethune, B-CC is a private, United Methodist Church-affiliated college with a student population of more than 2,700.
