* BRITISH KNIGHTS: Former South African President Nelson Mandela is a Knight of St. John after a ceremony in St. James's Palace, London. Mandela, 86, received an eight-pointed cross as part of the honor. The Order of St. John, headed by Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, is a historic Christian charity connected with the St.
John Ambulance. Below, opera singer/actor Sir Willard White received his Knighthood for services to music from the Queen at Buckingham Palace, London. His partner Franziska, and daughters Jana, 11, and Clara, 7, congratulate him. The 58-year-old Jamaican born singer, who is often compared to legendary American singer Paul Robeson, has performed in some of the great opera houses of the world and with many of the world's celebrated symphony orchestras.
