Grizzlies President And GM Stu Jackson Resigns; Joins NBA As Senior VP Of Basketball Operations

Jet, May 29, 2000

Stu Jackson, president and general manager of the Vancouver Grizzlies, recently resigned from the team to take on a new role as senior vice president of basketball operations with the NBA office in New York.

His departure came amidst a major management shake-up orchestrated by Grizzlies new owner Michael Heisley. Jackson, whose job had been in jeopardy since Chicago millionaire Heisley purchased the team from Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment for $160 million, announced his resignation a day after the firing of Coach Lionel Hollins.

A former New York Knicks coach, Jackson was the first person hired by the Grizzlies when they began operations in 1994. The club struggled to a 22-60 record in 1999-2000 and lost an estimated $20 million. The team has a five-year record of 78-300.

In what Heisley called the beginning of an era, the team named former NBA Coach Dick Versace new president of basketball operations. Billy Knight, vice-president of basketball operations for the Indiana Pacers, was hired as general manager, and ex-NBA Coach Chuck Daly was made a senior adviser.
