Royal Visits To Ghana And South Africa
Jet, Nov 29, 1999
Ghanaian President Jerry Rawlings escorts Britain's Queen Elizabeth II up the stairs that lead to the Ghanaian Parliament in the capital Accra. It was Queen Elizabeth II's second visit to Ghana in 38 years. Her two-day state visit for many Ghanaians was a powerful symbol of the complex, sometimes painful but nevertheless vibrant relationship between Ghana and Britain, the country's former colonial ruler.
Below, Queen Elizabeth II poses with South African President Thabo Mbeki and his wife, Zanele, as her husband, Prince Philip, looks on during a welcoming service at the presidential residence in Pretoria, South Africa. Queen Elizabeth II visited the two countries prior to her visit to Durban, South Africa, for a summit of Commonwealth nations.
