Harry Johnson Elected New President Of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity

Jet, Dec 4, 2000

The nation's oldest Black fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., recently selected Harry E. Johnson, Esq. as its 31st general president.

A native of St. Louis, Johnson practices law in Houston and serves as an adjunct professor of law at Texas Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law in the city.

Johnson, who will be sworn-in in January of 2001, plans to continue the legacy of past presidents and fulfill the commitment of his predecessors of building a national memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Alpha Phi Alpha has always stood in the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement, and we shall not waver from that commitment," said Johnson of the dream to deliver a memorial to the nation's capital. The United States Congress has given the fraternity sole authority to design and build a memorial to Dr. King.

Also included in Johnson's agenda for the next four years is the planning of the Centennial Celebration of the fraternity's founding in 1906.

Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in political science at Xavier University in New Orleans. He did post-baccalaureate work in public administration at St. Louis University in St. Louis and earned his law degree from Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

Johnson has been married for 20 years and is a father of three. He is also a member of the National and American Bar Associations.
