Jet, June 25, 2001

Gospel superstar Donnie McClurkin was recently ordained as pastor during services in Detroit.

Pastor Marvin L. Winans of the famed gospel family the Winans, and pastor of Perfecting Church in Detroit, officiated the services.

McClurkin, who is a member of the Perfecting Church, will move to Long Island, NY, where he will serve as senior pastor of Perfecting Faith Church, a non-denominational church.

McClurkin is one of the hottest gospel performers on the scene today. His No. 1 tune We Fall Down is a huge hit and is receiving heavy play on urban radio stations across the country and recently won a Dove Award as Best Traditional Song. We Fall Down is featured on McClurkin's gold album Live From London and More.... His other hits include Speak To My Heart and Stand from his 1996 self-titled debut album.

His long-awaited autobiography, Eternal Victim/Eternal Victor (Pneuma Life Publishing) is slated for release this month.

Reflecting on becoming an ordained pastor, McClurkin said: "It is the greatest joy I have ever known. I never thought I would love this like I do, because ministry means people."

Pastor McClurkin added, "The vision for the church is to heal those that have been broken in life and in the church. To introduce people to the living Saviour. To move on from religious tradition, to a relationship with God. To raise people from being obedient followers, to becoming powerful leaders to whatever capacity they have ability. The church doesn't need eternal followers, but we have to produce strong leaders. Regardless of backgrounds, and past situations, regardless of financial status, our vision is to minister to the whole man. This is not a religious country club, all are welcome."
