* KATHERINE DUNHAM'S 96TH BIRTHDAY: Katherine Dunham, world-acclaimed dancer, anthropologist, humanitarian and creator of the Dunham Technique, an African-based dance form, celebrates her 96th birthday during ceremonies at Riverside Church in New York City. Dunham (r) is congratulated by former students Ruby Streate (l), artistic director of the Katherine Dunham Museum Children's Workshop, and Dr.

Glory Van Scott, producer of the event, who gave Dunham a poetic salute called You Are Pleasing to All Eyes. All guests wore white for "La Boule Blanche," known as the white ball, which was part of the festivities. Many of Dunham's friends, including Rep. Charles Rangel and Joan Peters, ex-principal dancer at the Alvin Alley Dance Company, were present. Dunham was honored with music and dance tributes, bouquets and along with guests (below) satisfied her sweet tooth with chocolate mousse cake. Former Dunham School of Dance students include Eartha Kitt, Marion Brando and James Dean. She will receive the 2005 National Black Theatre Festival Lifetime Achievement Award in August.
