BLACK MAYORS CONFERENCE NAMES NEW LEADER: St. Gabriel, LA, Mayor George Grace, former president of the National Conference of Black Mayors (NCBM), welcomes the new president of the NCBM, James Perkins, mayor of Selma, AL, during the organization's recent 34th annual convention in New Orleans. Looking on are New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, who hosted the event, and other NCBM officials. Perkins made history in 2000 when he became the first Black mayor of Selma, marking a major turn in the city's long history of discrimination.
